Installing the BUILD Windows 8 Preview Bits on My Lenovo W520 Plus 2 External Monitors

Lots of trial and error, however I think I finally have a repeatable process to install Windows 8 Preview on my Lenovo W520 Laptop Computer.  First, some things that don’t work. Use the NVidia drivers included with Windows Update Use the NVidia drivers on the NVidia site Use the Lenovo ThinkVantage System Update And, for what does work. Set the bios mode to Discreet Mode Boot from the USB key provided at BUILD Make sure to skip installing the NVidia drivers on Windows Update ReBoot a lot.  After every possible prompt and update install Download Just the NVidia Video driver from the Lenovo Web site Don’t accept the second choice for more installation stuff when the NVidia driver prompts after … Continue Reading

Nasty Problem With OCZ Vertex 3 SSD on Lenovo W520 Solved

Recently, I posted about the new SSD drive I have for my Lenovo W520 Core-I7 smokin’ fast notebook computer (OCZ Vertex 3)  Clearly I was in the honey moon period because everything seemed blazingly fast. However, reality set in and the computer started hanging, refusing to boot all the way, have pregnant pauses, etc.  I called OCZ tech support and they suggest reload a fresh version of windows (now that’s a big help!).  I then posted to the Lenovo forums asking for advice on anything special I need to do when reloading. Important Update 5/13/2011: .../nasty-problem-with-ocz-vertex-3-ssd-on-lenovo-w520-solved/ Let me get the fireworks out of the way first so you don’t need to wait for the numbers   OCZ Technology 240 GB Vertex 3 SATA III 6.0 Gb/s 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive VTX3-25SAT3-240G: Electronics   For those that don’t know what these numbers represent, let me tell you, this is a screamer!  The W520 actually supports the SATA III interface spec which goes up 600MB.  I was wondering if it would actually work and I have to say, if it’s showing Sequential reads of 472.2 MB/second, it must be working.  The drive holds 240Gig and currently costs about $600. Always Wanting the Latest Fastest Lenovo ThinkPad. Info on W520 Follows

It seems that at the following location, you can see all the latest specs (no prices) on the upcoming Lenovo W520 ThinkPad. http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/tabook.pdf It seems that some industrious mail order catalog’s have listed the prices (notable, one of my favorites, ProVantage) so that gives me something to compare.  I’m not sure I’ll get one right away, because they are pretty expensive and of course  want the top of the line, but we will see what happens when they are actually released.
